The screen showing the communication between Haadiya and the people searching for Virgil Ten moved too fast for Sofie to keep track of the individual messages. Along with what seemed to be a running commentary on the street, Nhu added her research on the man to help set up the capture.

“Got him,” Haadiya announced an hour after the search began, a grin on his face making him look younger. “This is exciting. If you can get more names, I’m happy to direct the search.”

“It’s not a game. I want to see his face now,” Sofie said.

Haadiya sent two messages. One to stop the constant reports from people still looking for Virgil Ten and the other to take and transmit a photo.

The man was around Sofie’s height, so half a head shorter than most men on the Mallet. His hair was dull gray and his skin was only a few shades darker, where it wasn’t livid with bruising. He stood between two tall dark streets thugs. Neither was touching him, but he held his right arm in his left like it was damaged.

“I said no violence.” Sofie snapped the words to Haadiya.

“I don’t think they did it,” Haadiya said.

“Why?” Sofie glanced at Rick and then at the medical kit.

“Two reasons. They will be punished if they disobey me, and my people don’t disobey me.”

“We’ll see what he tells us,” Sofie said, trying to keep an open mind. If Haadiya was so confident, her suspicion might be completely wrong. “How long before they drop him off?”

“Ten minutes.” Haadiya closed the message thread, and the screen went blank.

“Nhu, what did you find on Virgil Ten?” Sofie asked. “We need something to use as leverage to get him to talk.”

“He is a supervisor in Manufacturing. No family.” Nhu flicked the data onto a screen. “Had the job for ten years. He seems to have performed well. I see no complaints to worry about. There are a few brawls, but he was not charged.”

A man with few ties. So, the mess we’re dealing with is probably for selfish reasons. “Okay, Rick, I’ll start with sympathy and trying to understand who beat him up and why. You go in when he’s weak.”

“I should be in the room,” Haadiya said. “I am intimidating.”

“If he’s organizing the riots, he’s not going to be intimidated by an Executive,” Sofie said.

“You haven’t seen me play the role fully,” Haadiya said.

“There’s nothing in his record about insubordination,” Nhu said. “He may indeed be prone to obey superiors.”

Then he should be willing to be honest with a cop.

“If he needs to be intimidated, Rick is good at doing that just standing in a corner.” She didn’t want Haadiya in the room with her. Interrogation required teamwork, and he wasn’t trained to play the game. Intimidation only worked if the subject felt it. She needed more information on Virgil Ten to even guess if it would work.

“I agree with Haadiya,” Rick said.

Why did everyone have to argue with her? Perhaps the ‘we’re all equals’ deal was too broad.
